Malaysia’s Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently responded to members of the public questioning his fashion choices, mostly revolving around Burberry shirts.
The 62-year-old lamented that Malaysians did not care about his street style when he was the defence minister. But he’s clearly being scrutinized by the rakyat now that he’s the Prime Minister.
“People used to like my shirts, but now that I’m the Prime Minister, they count how much it costs,” he said at the Barisan Nasional convention in Setia Alam yesterday.
Ismail also noted that one of his major responsibilities as the PM was to address the nation’s Covid-19 outbreak and the economical issues it caused.
As a defence minister, it’s good to note that Ismail was fond of batik shirts. As the Prime Minister, he preferred colourful Burberry shirts costing RM5,000 or more, which made him the target of critics online.
Ismail still continues to represent Malaysia’s cultural aspect in Batik shirts, just less often now that he has elevated his wardrobe a bit.
