Ismail Sabri is expected to face charges under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, believed to be linked to investigations into his asset declarations.
PETALING JAYA: The prosecution proceedings involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, which are scheduled to take place at the KL Sessions Court this morning, may instead be held at the National Heart Institute (IJN), where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
According to MalaysiaGazette, Ismail Sabri remained at the IJN as of this morning, although there has been no official confirmation on whether the proceedings will be moved to the medical facility.
However, no further details were provided regarding his medical condition or the nature of the treatment he is undergoing.
He is expected to face charges under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, believed to be linked to investigations into his asset declarations.
Previously, Ismail Sabri attended the MACC headquarters on several occasions to have his statement recorded as part of the investigation.
In March, then-MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki was reported as saying that the investigation centred on allegations of corruption and money laundering involving expenditure and the procurement of funds for promotional and publicity purposes during Ismail Sabri’s tenure as prime minister.
As part of the same investigation, the MACC reportedly seized about RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and confiscated 16kg of gold bullion estimated to be worth RM7 million.
The seizures were made during a series of raids at several premises, including residences and locations believed to have been used as safe houses, following investigations involving four of Ismail Sabri’s former senior officers.
As of this morning, neither the MACC nor the courts had issued an official statement confirming the venue for the former prime minister’s prosecution proceedings.
