Israeli border police shot and killed a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank who they said fired at them with a rifle, Israeli officials said on Monday.

The reports could not initially be independently verified.

Israeli police and military officials said the incident occurred in Qalandia, near Ramallah, during an Israeli operation in the area. None of the security officials were injured.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the man who was killed was 30 years old.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that Israeli forces stormed a vocational training institute which is operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

A report in the Israeli Haaretz newspaper also said the incident took place during an operation at an UNRWA facility.

Israel's police force did not initially confirm the details when asked. The facility has been raided in the past.

Israeli soldiers and border police are regularly deployed in the West Bank, and fatalities occur repeatedly.

The situation has escalated further since the Hamas-led attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing war in Gaza. Since then, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations, armed clashes and attacks, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. There has also been an increase in violence by radical Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
