For most, if not all, students in Malaysia, the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan is a godsent when it comes to funding for their tertiary studies.

Unfortunately, not all borrowers have started repaying their loans in a timely fashion, with some even questioning whether they even have to do so in the first place.

‘Do I have to repay my loan?’

In a post on Xiaohongshu (XHS), a netizen known as “Jayden Tan” posed the following question: Is it necessary to repay my PTPTN loan?

He then wrote in the caption that he was wondering how long after graduation must one start repaying the loan.

The netizen added that he heard from a friend that one has to finish repaying the loan a year after they’ve graduated or else they will end up on the travel blacklist.

Reactions

The post didn’t seem to sit well with other netizens, who wasted no time in calling out the OP over the post.

Many slammed him for asking such a ridiculous question, with one saying people like him were the reason why first honour students cannot get their PTPTN loan waived.

One wondered what form of “education” the OP had received to have such a sense of entitlement, while another reminded the OP that the fund was a loan, not a gift.

However, not all were upset with the OP, with one calling for calm and said the OP was trying to clarify whether he needed to settle the loan within a year after graduation or risk being barred from travelling overseas.
