WhatsApp is finally adding usernames to the messaging platform. This means that you can soon text others without needing to give away your personal phone number, or join a community group to get updates from others while still keeping your privacy.

The messaging app is rolling out username reservations, allowing you to select the username you want to use for WhatsApp in time for when they launch the feature later this year. With over three billion users, WhatsApp is opening up username reservations this early so that you’ll have the opportunity to select the username that matters to you.

To get your username, you’ll first what to update your WhatsApp, and then you can head over to the Settings page. There, you’ll want to click on Account, and then click on Username. At time of writing, we were able to reserve our preferred usernames for now, and you’ll also have the option of linking your existing Instagram or Facebook username to your WhatsApp.

One you’ve reserved your username, you will be able to share your usernames to others rather than your phone number when WhatsApp rolls out the update for it. WhatsApp says that they will be rolling out usernames gradually over the coming months, and will notify users once usernames are available in their country.
