Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh has played down worries that recent statements from UMNO Youth chief Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh regarding the party potentially going solo in the 16th general election (GE16) might lead to internal strife within UMNO.
In recent remarks, Dr. Akmal hinted that UMNO might consider running independently in GE16, a move he suggested would be guided by public needs and the sentiments of UMNO's grassroots supporters. This comment has sparked discussions about the possibility of disunity within the party, particularly regarding the direction of their electoral strategy.
However, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, a prominent UMNO Supreme Council member, has sought to reassure party members and supporters that such concerns are unfounded. He emphasized that UMNO Youth has always functioned as a vocal pressure group within the party, and their role is to voice opinions and concerns, rather than make binding decisions.

“The Youth Wing traditionally serves as a pressure group,” Rauf stated. “Their role is to express their views and raise issues, but they do not have the final say on party decisions.”
Rauf underscored that ultimate decisions are made by the Majlis Kerja Tertinggi (MKT), UMNO's highest decision-making body. He highlighted that the MKT assesses various factors, including party strength and strategic considerations, before reaching conclusions. Thus, while the Youth Wing’s opinions are valued, they do not determine the party’s course of action on their own.
Addressing the potential impact of Dr. Akmal’s comments on party unity, Rauf dismissed fears of disunity, asserting that internal dialogue and differing opinions are a normal part of the party's dynamic. “The concerns about disunity are overstated,” Rauf said. “The Youth Wing is free to express their opinions and suggest ideas, but the final decisions rest with the MKT. This process ensures that decisions are made with comprehensive consideration of all viewpoints.”
Dr. Akmal’s statements about possibly contesting GE16 independently were seen as part of a broader conversation about UMNO’s future strategy. He emphasized that any decision to go solo would be deeply influenced by both the needs of the electorate and the feedback from UMNO’s grassroots members.
Despite the discussions sparked by these comments, Rauf’s reassurances reflect a commitment to maintaining party cohesion and focusing on the strategic decisions that will ultimately guide UMNO's approach in the upcoming general election.
In summary, while UMNO Youth's bold statements have generated debate, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh’s comments serve to reinforce that internal discussions and varying perspectives are a standard aspect of the party’s operations, with the MKT holding the decisive authority on major electoral strategies.
