Jaecoo J5 EV will be launched in Malaysia on 2 September. This was confirmed through a teaser video on Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia’s social media pages.

The J5 EV is Omoda Jaecoo’s first fully electric offering for Malaysia. Like previous EVs that Chery Group have released in Malaysia, such as Omoda E5, iCaur 03, and iCaur V23, the J5 EV is locally assembled (CKD) in Malaysia.

While the official pricing has not yet been revealed, the order books for the J5 EV have been available for booking since last month with an estimated price of RM125,000.

Being a 4.38m long, 1.86m wide, and 1.65m tall SUV, the J5 EV is bigger than sub-compact SUVs such as the BYD Atto 2. At the same time, it is still more compact than crossover SUVs like the Proton e.MAS 7.

Featuring a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration, the J5 EV comes with a 155kW (208hp) electric motor that also produces 288Nm of torque. For the Malaysian market, the vehicle is equipped with a 58.9 kWh CATL LFP battery pack, which yields a WLTP-rated driving range of 402 km on a full charge.

The electric SUV also comes with an active grille shutter, level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), a 540-degree camera system, a rear multi-link suspension setup, and 18-inch aero wheels with Giti GitiControl P10 235/55 tyres.

Despite its positioning as a mainstream offering, the J5 EV includes numerous comfort and convenience features that are typically found on higher-priced vehicles. It is uncommon for vehicles in this class to offer these features as standard equipment in a single package.

Key highlights for the Malaysian market include:

  • Motorised charging port cover
  • Large panoramic glass roof with an adjustable, motorised sunshade
  • Double-glazed front side windows
  • Power tailgate
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Frunk

Other notable features on the J5 EV include pet-friendly synthetic leather upholstery, dedicated modes for pet and camping, ventilated front seats with electronic controls, an 8.88-inch fixed-segment digital instrument cluster, 13.2-inch infotainment screen, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality.

In addition to that, J5 EV’s charging hardware is highly competitive for its segment. The Malaysian variant features an 11kW 3-phase AC onboard charger, a specification that remains relatively rare among entry-to-mid tier electric vehicles locally.

For fast charging, it supports up to 130kW DC charging. This capability allows J5 EV’s battery to be replenished from 30% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes.
