Jailed for keeping stolen goods

Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old man was sentenced to six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s court here, on Wednesday, for keeping stolen goods.

Mohamad Helmi Emi pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to keeping four tyres of various brands at about 3.40pm on Oct 15 this year, at Kampung Nogkulod, Tuaran, belonging to one Kristianto Tomas.

He was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between six months and five years, and a possible fine, upon conviction.

The court heard that the complainant had filed a police report on Jan 25 this year, stating that tyres were stolen from his store at Country Height Penampang.

Further investigation found that the accused was originally remanded for assistance of the case, before it was revealed that he was also involved.

Authorities uncovered the stolen goods at his home.

Separately, a 30-year-old man has been fined RM1,500 or two months’ jail for engaging in gambling activities.

Al Radzlan Riko pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus for online football betting in front of Haris Nasi Kandar, Putatan, on July 8 at around 11.55pm.

He committed the offense under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail, or both, on conviction.

Prosecuting officer Dzulfamie Amrin informed the court that on the said day, a police team conducted Ops Dadu at the premises, where they found the accused engaged in online football betting.

Police seized his handphone before arresting the accused.

During mitigation, duty counsel Jasamine Tan Pui San, representing Al Radzlan, requested for a lenient fine as the accused was divorced with one 4-year-old child.

He was also unemployed, but provided mainly for his 71-year-old grandmother who was recovering from a heart attack.

However, the prosecution requested for the appropriate sentence.
