Jasmine Loo, the former in-house lawyer for 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), emerged as a pivotal witness in the 1MDB case, shedding light on the shadowy threats and fear that loomed over her if she ever returned to Malaysia. Her testimony, delivered as the 50th prosecution witness in Najib Razak's trial, revealed a chilling narrative of intimidation orchestrated by Jho Low, a central figure in the scandal.

Contrary to accusations of evading Malaysian investigators, Loo explained that her extended stay abroad was driven by genuine concerns for her safety. She detailed how Jho Low, also known as Low Taek Jho, had threatened to make her life a "living hell" if she dared to return. This threat, she claimed, was not a mere expression but a sustained campaign of intimidation that forced her into exile since 2018.

During her five-year absence from Malaysia, Loo stated that she refrained from working and relied on sporadic financial support from Jho Low, approximately receiving US$2,500 every eight to nine months. Despite the discomfort of relying on someone who had threatened her, Loo justified her actions as necessary for her survival, given the circumstances she faced.

Loo's decision to cooperate with 1MDB investigators upon her return in July 2023 was not an easy one. She recounted how Jho Low's threats had instilled deep fear in her, not only for her career but also for her life. She described a chilling atmosphere of reprisal and danger that made her stay away from Malaysia, even during critical events such as the general elections.

Her narrative also highlighted the pervasive influence Jho Low wielded over her life, dictating her actions and movements. Loo explained that Jho Low had instructed her to remain abroad, promising to resolve any issues that arose in her absence. This promise, however, was tainted with the implicit threat of dire consequences if she defied his orders.

Despite the coercive tactics employed against her, Loo maintained that she had no intention of evading her obligations. She emphasized that her actions were driven by a genuine fear for her safety and a desire to avoid the severe repercussions threatened by Jho Low.
