The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director-general, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad, has revealed plans to establish a dedicated task force aimed at assessing the safety equipment of all buildings to ensure their effectiveness during emergencies. This initiative comes as a response to concerns regarding structures constructed prior to the implementation of the Uniform Building By-laws 1984, which may not adhere to specified safety requirements.

During an appearance on Bernama Radio's Exclusive Interview with JBPM segment, Nor Hisham highlighted discrepancies in safety equipment installations, citing the example of Seri Sabah Flats where dry risers were installed instead of wet risers as required. This oversight resulted in insufficient water supply during a recent incident, underscoring the need for a collective evaluation of safety measures.

The proposed inspection process will be comprehensive, covering both buildings and public housing nationwide, particularly those built before 1984. JBPM plans to inspect over 14,000 premises, including homestays and shopping centers, to ensure the highest standards of safety are upheld.

Nor Hisham stressed the importance of compliance with safety criteria, stating that enforcement action could be taken against buildings failing to meet requirements, compelling them to upgrade existing systems. He also cautioned against obstructing fire hydrants or riser areas, warning that penalties would be imposed for such violations.

Furthermore, Nor Hisham emphasized the shared responsibility of building owners and management in maintaining fire safety equipment. While acknowledging the challenges of conducting annual inspections, he underscored the significance of regular maintenance to ensure the proper functioning of safety systems. Residents were encouraged to advocate for maintenance efforts by building management, with Nor Hisham noting over 100 complaints received regarding inadequate maintenance practices.

In conclusion, the establishment of a special task force underscores JBPM's commitment to enhancing fire safety measures in buildings across Malaysia. By conducting comprehensive inspections and enforcing compliance with safety standards, the department aims to mitigate risks and ensure the protection of occupants during emergencies. Residents and building management alike are urged to prioritize maintenance efforts to uphold safety standards effectively.
