Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) demonstrated their dominance in Malaysian football once again, securing their fourth consecutive FA Cup title with a resounding 6-1 victory over Selangor in the 2024/2025 FA Cup final. The match, held last night at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, highlighted JDT's superiority in a clash between the top two teams in the Super League.

The Southern Tigers, known for their relentless pursuit of victory, wasted no time establishing their control over the game. It was JDT’s midfielder, Juan Muniz, who set the tone early on, finding the back of the net in the 26th minute. Muniz's goal marked the beginning of an impressive performance that would see him secure a hattrick by the end of the night. As the first half progressed, JDT continued to apply pressure, and their efforts were rewarded when national winger Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi extended their lead to 2-0 with a well-taken goal in the 42nd minute.

Despite the uphill battle they faced, Selangor showed resilience in the second half. Their efforts paid off in the 59th minute when foreign striker Alvin Fortes managed to pull one back for the Red Giants, momentarily giving them hope of a comeback. However, any aspirations Selangor had were quickly dashed as JDT responded with ruthless efficiency. In the space of just five minutes, the Southern Tigers scored two more goals. Striker Bergson Da Silva made it 3-1 in the 62nd minute, and Muniz followed up with his second goal in the 67th minute, effectively sealing the victory for JDT.

Even with the match firmly in their grasp, JDT showed no signs of letting up. Their offensive prowess was on full display as Herberty Fernandes added a fifth goal in the 76th minute. Not content with just two goals, Muniz completed his hattrick shortly before the final whistle, capping off a memorable night for JDT and their fans.

This latest triumph adds another prestigious trophy to JDT’s already impressive collection for the season. Earlier in May, they were awarded the Charity Shield after Selangor forfeited the match, further cementing their status as the team to beat in Malaysian football.

On the other hand, the defeat extended Selangor's trophy drought, which has now stretched for over a decade. The last time Selangor lifted the FA Cup was in 2009, following a dramatic 4-1 victory over Kelantan in a penalty shootout. Their most recent major success came in 2015 when they claimed the Malaysia Cup, a victory that now seems distant as they struggle to recapture their former glory.

As the 2024/2025 season progresses, JDT's victory serves as a reminder of their continued dominance in the domestic football scene, while Selangor will need to regroup and reassess their strategies if they hope to challenge the Southern Tigers in future competitions.
