Jennifer Lawrence joins Instagram but threatens to ‘quit immediately’

Jennifer Lawrence has cautioned social media users that she will "quit" Instagram if anyone "says anything negative".

The 36-year-old created a public account on Wednesday, rapidly attracting more than 1.8 million followers. In her inaugural video post, the Hollywood star issued a clear warning to any potential comment section trolls.

She said: "I’m giving it a shot, and if anyone says anything negative, I will quit immediately. No questions asked. If anyone thinks something mean, I’ll know. I’ll know and I’ll quit."

In her bio, Lawrence noted that she adopted the handle jlaw because her full name was already taken. Writing on her Instagram story, she added: "Please be mindful that any mean or aggressive comments can negatively affect the baby. It’s me. I’m the baby."

A string of notable figures quickly commented to offer support, including Emily in Paris actress Lily Collins, Chicken Shop Date star Amelia Dimoldenberg and Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp.

Last year, Lawrence opened up about feeling embarrassed about her past “hyper” and “embarrassing” personality in old press junkets, saying: “Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism.”

She explained that her bluntness came through as a way to navigate fame. “It was a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!’” Lawrence said.

“I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying,” she acknowledged. “Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was spot-on,” she said, referencing Grande’s 2018 parody of her.

“I felt — I didn’t feel, I was, I think — rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality,” she added.

Lawrence’s breakout performance came in the 2010 independent drama Winter’s Bone, which earned her nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards and Academy Awards. She achieved worldwide renown after starring in dystopian franchise The Hunger Games alongside Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

The actor went on to star in superhero film X-Men: First Class (2011), romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook (2012), for which she won a best actress Oscar, and psychological drama Die My Love (2025). In 2018, she established her own production company, Excellent Cadaver, going on to produce and star in drama Causeway (2022) and comedy No Hard Feelings (2023).
