American Horror Story fans may find Jessica Lange’s ranking of her favourite characters surprising.
Ryan Murphy’s popular franchise tells a different horror story each season, with recurring cast members often taking on entirely new roles.
Lange, 77, currently stars in the series’ 13th season, in which she reprises her previous characters from Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jessica placed Elsa Mars, the manager of the titular Freak Show in season four, in the top spot.
She said: “Just because that was my favorite season.
“I loved the whole world we created there, and I always felt that set was like, you know, a long poem. It was just so wonderful.
“And the characters that we brought in to be part of that freak show.”
Her favourite part of the run was getting the chance to sing as part of her character.
She added: “Nobody ever lets me sing. I can’t sing.”
Fans may be surprised by her choice, as Freak Show holds a 77 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes but just 69 per cent on its audience-rated Popcornmeter – the lowest of Lange’s four seasons.
Her second favourite character is a “toss-up” between her Murder House role as Constance, and her turn as tyrannical nun Sister Jude in Asylum.
She said: “I’d put them both in the middle.”

Asylum is the highest rated of her four seasons according to Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, with 90, while Murder House follows behind on 84.
With critics, the two seasons are scored at 84 and 72, respectively.
Jessica placed her role as former Supreme Fiona Goode from Coven as her least favourite, which reflects the season as a whole.
She explained: “I mean, the whole witch thing was less interesting to me.
“But there were some scenes with Fiona Goode that are some of my favourites, like the last scene with Danny Huston in the afterlife.”
In the finale of the 2014 run, Fiona has died from cancer and wakes up in her own personal hell, which sees her trapped with Huston’s character, The Axeman, and forced to drink cheap wine.
Coven scored 85 percent with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and 76 percent with audiences.
Jessica had previously shut down the idea of ever returning to American Horror Story, but changed her mind after a conversation with Ryan Murphy.
She recently told Live With Kelly and Mark: “Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back.
“First, he talked to me about playing Constance, which I think was his favourite character that I did. But I said I’ll come back if I can do all four characters.”
