Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was sentenced to 14 days jail on Wednesday for stealing an 18-litre tin of paint worth RM105 from a restaurant.

Meni Amir, 35, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to stealing the Nippon Paint Matex Emulsion paint on Feb 3, this year, at 8.20pm, at the Taste of Besties restaurant, Alamesra Plaza Utama.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yuvan Bharathan in presenting the facts of the case, informed the court that Meni was seen stealing the paint tin by workers of another restaurant, who then alerted the workers of Taste of Besties restaurant.

Duty counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Meni, requested a lenient sentence saying that Meni, who is married with two children and unemployed, was remorseful of his wrongdoing.

The court ordered Meni to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and the paint tin to be returned to it owner.

Md Qhairil Md Akdam admitted to having two paper cutter knives, a testing pen, three pliers and a pair of gloves without a valid reason, as the tools could be used for committing a burglary on Jan 28, this year, at 11.30pm, in front of the security guard office of Grand Merdeka Mall, Bandar Sierra.

The charge under Section 18(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance carries a jail term of up to six months, on conviction.

The court heard from the prosecution that Qhairil was arrested by the security guards at the basement of the building, which had been closed outside of its operating hours.

A check in Qhairil’s bag found the said tools, said the prosecution adding that Qhairil was then handed to police.

Unrepresented, Qhairil requested a lenient sentence saying that he is married with two children.

The court ordered him to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

Meanwhile, three men were penalised for taking drugs.

Gikaldo Ajilin, Rashid Yaco and Azmin Jamil admitted to taking syabu and amphetamine between Sept 25 and Nov 24 last year here.

Gikaldo was jailed seven months and ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department while Rashid was handed six months jail.

Azmin was fined RM2,000 or five months jail.

They were each charged under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.
