Stand-up comedies are part of our lives, giving us fun and laughter. However, for the past 2 days, a Singaporean-born standup comedian named Jocelyn Chia became a hot topic in both Malaysia and Singapore, as she overstepped the bottom line of people's hearts by bringing up Malaysia's economic development and the MH370 tragedy as part of her "jokes". Such offensive jokes had ignited Malaysians' anger, and netizens mass reported her on social media, causing a suspension of her IG account. But do you know, how "good" she used to be?

Her previous profession

According to a Malaysian radio announcer Mei Yan who commented on Jack Lim's Facebook post, Jocelyn used to be a tip-top lawyer by profession as per what was mentioned on Jocelyn's website.

According to ViralCham, as an elite lawyer, Jocelyn used to possess an annual income of around a hundred thousand USD (millions MYR). Nevertheless, she decided to resign as a lawyer in the year 2009 and became a full-time stand-up comedian as she enjoyed expressing her point of view on stage. After switching from law to comedy, she has won multiple awards, ranging from the Gotham Comedy Club’s Funniest Lawyer Competition to the first runner-up of the She-Devil Comedy Festival, and is even a two-time winner of the Moth Storyslams.

What's her nationality?

From her offensive joke, we all know that she is a Singapore-born American comedian who moved to the States. Unfortunately, she might not be a proud Singaporean anymore. After the 86 seconds video from TikTok went viral, multiple Singaporean actors and actresses had to apologize on her behalf. Even Singapore’s High Commission posted on Facebook yesterday to express an apology from High Commissioner Vanu Gopala Menon.

It was stated in the post that :

"The Singapore Government does not condone words or actions that cause harm or hurt to others and Chia, who is no longer Singaporean, does not in any way reflect our views. I sincerely apologise to all Malaysians for her hurtful remarks."

Hence, Jocelyn Chia is no longer a Singaporean now, and her nationality is unknown.
