Joey Barton to stand trial over alleged assault outside golf club

Former footballer Joey Barton is due to stand trial charged with an assault outside a golf club.

The 43-year-old denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, at Fairway, Huyton, on March 8.

His trial is listed to begin at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack is alleged to have taken place after he had been drinking with Mr Lynch at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Mr Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of special education school NexGen Academy, was said to have suffered serious injuries to his eye.

Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, previously played for Manchester City and QPR.

The former midfielder has one England cap and also played for Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille.

Following his playing career, he was manager of Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers.
