John Cena stepped out with a new buzz cut over the weekend at San Diego’s Comic-Con, revealing that it was part of the process of his second hair transplant.
The retired wrestler-turned-actor, 49, underwent his first hair transplant in November 2024 after being “bullied” by fans. He recently returned for a follow-up procedure in June.
“The objective is to get more hair, and this was the best way to do it, talking with Ken Anderson, my doctor over there,” Cena told People of his new hairdo. “I love the guy. He’s totally changed my life.”
The former WWE wrestler returned to Dr. Anderson, who runs the Anderson Center for Hair in Georgia, just 15 months after his initial transplant.
“I went back to him like, ‘Man, you did great. I have this one small, small, small spot. Can you do it?’” Cena recalled. “He’s like, ‘I can. My best results are — if you’re bold enough to shave your head, I can keep the follicles.’”
Cena explained that planting hair follicles is easier and quicker to do on a shaved head. “My first operation was 13 and a half hours. The second one was eight hours,” he revealed.
“And I’m rocking this hair thing with the promise that he’s working,” Cena added. “I have full trust and faith in him with this process.”
The 17-time wrestling champion has previously opened up about his hair transplant journey.
Speaking candidly about his decision to undergo the procedure on an April 2025 episode of The Pat McAfee Show, Cena said: “I just saw so many bald spots signs. Your hair falls out because the new ones have to grow, so the old ones fall out. I had it in November, that’s when I became half a skinhead.”
Turning to the audience, he joked, “By the way, thank you for being so aware of my needs and emotions because you guys ripped me to shreds for a genetic problem that I can’t control.”
He shared some of the comments he received, including “You don’t look good enough out there.”
“I’m in the Rumble trying to win, you’re like, ‘Man has a bald spot,’” Cena said. “One of you sons of b****es could’ve pulled me to the side. But no, in unison, you chant and make me feel small and embarrass me. Y’all don’t know what that’s like. That is straight-up bullying and not cool. Thank you for bullying me into getting surgical hair replacement. That’s how far y’all pushed me.”
