JOHOR BAHRU: The Immigration Department detained 177 foreign workers for various offences under Ops Mahir at two factories in the Gelang Patah area here yesterday.
Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the joint operation with the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) was conducted based on intelligence and public information at an electronics factory and a metal engineering factory at 5 pm.
He said those detained comprised 140 Myanmar nationals (34 men, 106 women); 24 Bangladeshi men; four Indian men and nine Nepalese women, all aged between 19 and 38.
“Some individuals tried to flee during the inspection, but the swift action of the enforcement team foiled the attempt,” he said in his statement today.
Mohd Rusdi said checks were conducted on their travel documents, passes and relevant permits to ensure compliance with the stipulated legal provisions.
He said all those detained were suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963, and were placed at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot for further investigation.
Three Malaysians, who were human resource officers at the premises, were also detained.
