KUALA LUMPUR  — Pakatan Harapan (PH) Johor is ready to face state elections following the dissolution of the legislative assembly today.

The coalition’s component party leaders said they had been expecting the dissolution and had begun preparations for the state's 16th polls, ahead of the state assembly's automatic expiry in April next year.

“We take note of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s announcement on the dissolution today. From early on, PH has been expecting Barisan Nasional (BN) to call for dissolution of the assembly.

“And it never made sense to call for the special one-day sitting on June 22,” the state-level leaders of Amanah, PKR and DAP said in a joint statement.

They were referring to the notice issued by the Johor State Legislative Assembly Secretary on May 29 to all Johor assemblymen to attend a special sitting on June 22. No reason was given for the sitting. The notice also said the assemblymen could not submit any questions for the special assembly.

“PH will continue with its existing preparations to face the election. PH Johor will also hold discussions with the central PH presidential council on the next steps,” the state leaders said.

The Johor PH leaders are Aminolhuda Hassan from Amanah who is also state coalition chairman, PKR’s Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and DAP’s Teo Nie Ching.

Onn Hafiz announced the dissolution at 5pm today in a special online broadcast. He said the Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim had given his consent to the writ of dissolution today.

Johor’s state assembly has 56, of which BN holds 40 seats. PH has 12 seats, Perikatan Nasional three and Muda, one.

Last month, Onn Hafiz, who is also Johor BN chairman, said Johor BN will contest the state election alone, without collaboration with PH. - June 1, 2026
