Johor state election: PAS ready to help BN form state government

PAS is ready to contribute the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats it won if Barisan Nasional (BN) does not obtain a simple majority to form the State government after the Johor State Election (PRN) this Saturday.

PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang stated that the party will also not seek the position of Johor Menteri Besar or a seat in the State Government Exco.

"If Umno lacks a majority, Pas can complement them depending on the number of seats we win to help form a government with a simple majority. If they want a two-thirds majority and Pas has enough seats, we will lend our support," he said.

Abdul Hadi said that PAS is willing to work with UMNO to ensure that the Malay-Muslim struggle continues to be defended, especially in efforts to dominate the political power of Muslims in Johor.

He said that the stance was based on the view that Muslims need to dominate the power of government to ensure that administration can be implemented based on Islam.

According to him, Johor has a close relationship between the Malays and Islam to the extent that the identities of both have often been linked in the lives of the people of the state for a long time.

“This factor is among PAS’s considerations to open up space for cooperation with UMNO to ensure that the political power of Muslims continues to remain dominant.

“In addition, history also proves that PAS and UMNO have worked together when fighting for the country’s independence and defending the position of Islam in the Constitution.

“PAS and UMNO fought together in the early days. We are together to place Islam in the Constitution as the religion of the Federation,” he said.

According to Abdul Hadi, PAS's political struggle is centred on Islamic teachings, which include aspects of administration, economy, politics and justice for the entire community.

“We do not choose PH because in the coalition, there are parties whose approaches are not in line with PAS's struggle. We want cooperation that defends the position of Islam and the interests of Muslims in politics,” he said. – July 9, 2026
