In a significant development, the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, has officially appointed his son, Crown Prince Tunku Ismail, as the Regent of Johor. The decision, announced by Johor Royal Court Council president Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Ramli, follows the provisions outlined in Clause 9 (1)(d) and (3) of the Johor State Constitution 1895. The move aims to ensure the seamless continuation of governance in the state during the Sultan's tenure as Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, the reigning Sultan and Sovereign Ruler of the State and Territory of Johor Darul Ta’zim, made this historic decision with the counsel of the Johor Royal Court Council. The appointment was formalized on Sunday, Jan 28, 2024, corresponding to 16 Rejab 1445 Hijrah at Istana Bukit Serene, the official residence of the Johor Sultanate.

Abdul Rahim Ramli conveyed the Sultan's consent to bestow upon Tunku Ismail the title of His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail, the Regent of Johor. The significance of this title extends to all government matters, encompassing official correspondence, speeches, and prayers.

Tunku Ismail, aged 39 and born on June 30, 1984, is the eldest among the six children of Sultan Ibrahim and the Permaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah. Prior to this formal appointment, Tunku Ismail had assumed the role of Regent on multiple occasions, with the most recent instance occurring on June 16, 2022, when Sultan Ibrahim temporarily stepped back from his administrative responsibilities.

Having married Her Highness Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor on Oct 24, 2014, Tunku Ismail is a proud father of two sons and two daughters: Tunku Khalsom Aminah Sofiah, Tunku Iskandar Abdul Jalil Abu Bakar Ibrahim, Tunku Abu Bakar Ibrahim, and Tunku Zahrah Zarith Aziyah.

The appointment of Tunku Ismail as Regent comes at a crucial juncture as Sultan Ibrahim is set to embark on his role as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term, effective Jan 31. This move not only reflects the Sultan's confidence in his son's ability to carry out regal responsibilities but also underscores the commitment to a smooth transition of power within the royal lineage.

The Regent's role is pivotal in ensuring the continuity of governance and upholding the traditions and values associated with the Johor Sultanate. Tunku Ismail's wealth of experience, having served as Regent previously, positions him well to navigate the responsibilities and challenges that accompany this esteemed position.

As Johor anticipates a new era under the leadership of Sultan Ibrahim as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the appointment of Tunku Ismail as Regent symbolizes a harmonious blend of tradition and forward-looking governance, strengthening the bonds between the royal institution and the people of Johor.
