KUCHING (April 20): It was a successful tree-planting programme at the Sabal Forest Reserve in Simunjan recently, which gathered some 280 participants.

Jointly organised by Cahya Mata Sarawak and Forest Department Sarawak (FDS), the outing recorded the planting of 3,000 indigenous tree species, comprising high-value species such as ‘Kerukup’, ‘Engkabang’, ‘Kapur’, ‘Meranti’ and ‘Keruing’.

The participants represented Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Teachers Education Institute (IPG) Tun Abdul Razak Campus, Simunjan District police headquarters, the Armed Forces, and the local community.

“This initiative forms part of the ongoing long-term collaboration between FDS and Cahya Mata, reflecting a shared commitment towards sustained forest restoration and the implementation of the ‘Greening Sarawak Campaign’,” said FDS in a statement on Monday.

Beyond restoring degraded forest areas, the department said the programme served as a platform to enhance environmental awareness and strengthen collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions and local communities in conservation efforts.

“The continued implementation of such initiatives underscores the collective commitment of all parties in advancing sustainable forest management, and reinforcing long-term efforts in landscape restoration and biodiversity conservation in Sarawak,” it added.

Among the participants were were Cahya Mata chief human resources officer Mohd Farid Shah Mohd Basir and FDS Forest Restoration and Industrial Forest Division senior officer Mostafa Kamal.
