Jon Rahm is one of LIV Golf’s two biggest stars alongside Bryson DeChambeau.
Rahm joined LIV Golf in December 2023, and his move from the PGA Tour was expected to be the turning point in finally getting the two tours to merge, or at least operate closely together.
However, that hasn’t ended up being the case at all.
Since Jon Rahm joined LIV Golf two-and-a-half years ago, the PGA Tour has gone from strength to strength.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for LIV.
The future of LIV Golf is uncertain to say the least right now after Saudi Arabia’s PIF announced that they will be withdrawing their backing from the league at the end of the 2026 season.
As a result, there have been claims that LIV Golf could fold as a result of PIF’s imminent exit.
There have even been suggestions that Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau have contacted the PGA Tour about potential returns.
Jon Rahm comments on the news that PIF won’t be funding LIV Golf anymore
With the future of LIV Golf very much up in the air right now, it’s no surprise that everyone is desperate to hear Jon Rahm’s thoughts on the situation.
Rahm addressed the media in Virginia on Tuesday ahead of the event which is due to start at Trump National Golf Club on Thursday.
The 31-year-old responded when asked to share his thoughts on PIF cutting off their funding of LIV from the end of the 2026 season onwards.
“Honestly I think the initial news and rumors over there in Mexico, since we’re in a tournament week, I almost just tried to act as if it was just rumors,“ Rahm explained.
“Because we’re competing, I didn’t want to waste any energy on an already demanding week thinking about it. So for me, the reality kind of came afterwards.
“I would say, like everybody, surprised, obviously unexpected. We did hear the news that there would be funding through for many years, so unexpected.“
Jon Rahm on whether he thinks LIV Golf can survive without PIF
Rahm was asked by reporters what he believes the future looks like for LIV Golf now.
“Then as the future of the league goes, I think that’s obviously a question for the business people,“ the Spaniard said.
“We want to be here. It’s been a lot of fun. I want to keep competing. I want to keep sharing some time with them.
“But only time will tell. Scott and his team have a lot of hard work to do, but obviously they’re experienced in the area, and that’s why they’ve been chosen to take this role.“
It remains to be seen whether Scott O’Neil is capable of attracting further investment into LIV Golf.
And having Jon Rahm tied down for the long-term will be crucial to O’Neil’s hopes of doing just that.
