KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will hold its first engagement session with RXZ Members organisers to discuss improvements to the motorcycle gathering, following a series of accidents linked to the event, Sinar Harian reported.

JPJ Senior Director of Enforcement Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the session aimed to hear the organisers’ views and propose several improvements to the programme.

“We are not trying to restrict the event. What is important is road safety, not only for the participants but also for other road users,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay-language daily at a press conference at the JPJ Kuala Lumpur office yesterday.

Muhammad Kifli said the engagement session would be held at the JPJ headquarters in Putrajaya today.

On Aug 2, media reported that JPJ would step up enforcement against participants of motorcycle gatherings, including holding an engagement session with organisers following accidents frequently associated with such events.

JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department did not prevent the organisation of motorcycling programmes, but all participants were required to comply with road laws and vehicle technical regulations.

Meanwhile, 46 road accidents involving motorcyclists were recorded over four days from July 30 to Aug 2 during the RXZ Members 8.0 programme.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said 11 cases, or 24 per cent, involved fatal accidents, while five cases (11 per cent) involved serious injuries and 30 cases (65 per cent) involved minor injuries.
