PETALING JAYA: The national registration department (JPN) is investigating the case of a 21-year-old woman without a MyKad after Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman highlighted her plight on Instagram.
Yesterday, Syed Saddiq said that a woman by the name of Melissa Aurellia Quek has been unable to obtain a Malaysian identity card despite her birth certificate stating she is a Malaysian citizen.
He said Quek has been denied access to education and is unable to compete in sports tournaments, adding that many other citizens are facing similar problems.
“JPN has contacted Quek to obtain the facts of the case,” it said in a statement today.

JPN added that those who face difficulties regarding citizenship matters, late birth registration, adoption or non-Muslim marriage procedures can seek assistance at any JPN office throughout the country.
“Applicants are advised to appear in person without using the services of an agent or middleman as each application may require a different solution,” it said.
The department also urged netizens not to sensationalise such matters to avoid an “untrue impression” about the civil service’s efficiency and competence.
