Court of Appeal Judges Datuk Hanipah Farikullah and Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera were officially sworn in as Federal Court judges today, marking a significant milestone in their esteemed legal careers.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Conference Hall, Palace of Justice, saw Hanipah, aged 64, and Vazeer Alam, aged 62, taking their oaths before Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. This ceremonial act solidifies their roles as integral members of the Federal Court judiciary.

Hanipah, originally from Besut, Terengganu, ascended to the Court of Appeal judgeship on April 27, 2018. Notably, she presided over pivotal cases, including Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor’s appeal regarding the appointment of the late Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram as lead prosecutor in the solar hybrid project corruption case. Additionally, Hanipah led a three-member bench in Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s appeal concerning a RM1.9 million lawsuit against former Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, showcasing her proficiency in navigating complex legal matters, particularly in criminal law.

Vazeer Alam, whose appointment to the Court of Appeal dates back to Aug 8, 2019, has also left an indelible mark in the legal arena. He spearheaded significant cases, such as the corruption case involving former Felda chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad and the tragic murder case of Cradle Fund chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan. His judicious leadership and expertise have been instrumental in ensuring justice is served.

Furthermore, the ceremony also witnessed the swearing-in of three judicial commissioners – Su Tiang Joo, Alexander Siew How Wai, and Amelati Parnell – as High Court judges, further enriching Malaysia’s judicial landscape.

Su Tiang Joo, aged 64 and hailing from Muar, Johor, transitioned from his role as a judicial commissioner in the High Court of Ipoh, Perak, to his new appointment in the esteemed High Court of Kuala Lumpur. Notably, his tenure has been characterized by a commitment to upholding the principles of justice and fairness.

Alexander Siew How Wai, a native of Sandakan, Sabah, assumed the role of High Court judge in Kuching, Sarawak, following his stint as a judicial commissioner. His notable decision to allow the judicial review of five youths advocating for the implementation of Undi18 underscores his dedication to facilitating democratic processes and youth participation in governance.

Meanwhile, Amelati Parnell, a Sarawakian by birth, embarked on her judicial career in 1990 as a magistrate at the Kuching Magistrate’s Court, eventually rising to the position of judicial commissioner in the High Court of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Her recent transfer to the Bintulu High Court, Sarawak, underscores her continued commitment to dispensing justice across different regions of Malaysia.

In essence, the swearing-in ceremony signifies not only a personal achievement for the esteemed judges and judicial commissioners but also a reaffirmation of Malaysia’s commitment to a fair and equitable judicial system. These appointments further bolster the judiciary’s capacity to uphold the rule of law and deliver justice to all citizens.
