Cheam June Wei and two Malaysian men’s doubles pairs advanced to the Korea Masters semi-finals after winning their quarter-final matches.

TWO national men’s doubles pairs and a men’s singles shuttler booked their places in the semi-finals of their Korea Masters after clearing their quarter-final hurdles at the Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium today.

World No. 72 Cheam June Wei led the charge by pulling off an upset against world No 42 and seventh seed Yang Su Li of Taiwan, prevailing 23-21, 10-21, 21-18.

The hard-fought victory saw June Wei maintain his perfect record against reigning US Open champion Su Li to extend his head-to-head advantage to 3-0.

June Wei will next face China’s Zhu Xuan Chen for a place in the final of the Super 300 tournament.

In men’s doubles, Tee Kai Wun-Yap Roy King took just 28 minutes to defeat Aaron Chia-Aaron Tai 21-12, 21-15 in an all-Malaysian clash and set up a last four showdown against Japan’s Shuji Sawada-Daigo Tanioka.

Another Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Man Wei Chong-Soh Wooi Yik, also turned on the style to dispose of India’s Krishna Prasad Garaga-Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy 21-7, 21-8.

Wei Chong-Wooi Yik will meet Japan’s Haruki Kawabe-Kenta Matsukawa in the semi-finals.

However, Malaysia’s mixed doubles campaign ended after all three remaining pairs were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Chen Tang Jie-Clarissa San lost 20-22, 17-21 to Japan’s Kawabe-Kokona Ishikawa; fifth seeds Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin went down 17-21, 18-21 to second-seeded Kim Jae Hyeon-Jang Ha Jeong of South Korea; and Loo Bing Kun-Noraqilah Maisarah fell 14-21, 15-21 to China’s third-seeded Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying.
