Recently, the news about an open-micer named Siti Nuramira was the headline for most of the week.
On July 19, she was freed by the police and was rearrested by Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (JAWI). In the latest update, she was released by JAWI, and it is said that she will not be charged at the Syariah High Court.
According to Berita Harian, this is because the allegations are similar. If the woman is given a sentence, the sentence passed by the civil court will be heavier than that of the Syariah court.
Her lawyer’s paralegal said they received a call from a JAWI officer at 10pm on July 19 telling them their client would be freed without bail or bond by JAWI.
The paralegal added that JAWI will contact Siti Nuramira or her legal team when they are ready to continue prosecution proceedings.
Siti Nuramira’s legal team has said that they were ready to go forward with the prosecution proceedings but were still unable to secure a guarantor to help the open-micer.
On July 13, Siti Nuramira pleaded not guilty to her charges under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony in the Muslim community during an open-mic session at the Crackhouse Comedy in TTDI.
