Justin Arana cracks Gilas 12, takes spot of injured Carl Tamayo

MANILA, Philippines — Converge big man Justin Arana has been inserted to the Gilas Pilipinas final 12 in lieu of injured Carl Tamayo heading to the Philippines’ collision versus Iran on Sunday’s FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers fourth window at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The hulking Arana cracked the final 12 for the first time, and will hopefully, get the chance to play considering he’s new to coach Tim Cone’s system.

Moreover, the former PBA Rookie of the Year, will more likely serve as a backup at front court behind young giants Kai Sotto and AJ Edu as well as veteran June Mar Fajardo.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas made the official announcement of Arana’s inclusion on Saturday night at its social media platforms.

The 6-7 Tamayo sprained his ankle in the third period after stepping on the foot of Jordanian slotman Ahmad Al Dawairi while driving to the basket in the early goings of the second half.

Gilas was behind, 46-43 at that point when play got halted as Tamayo was seen grimacing in pain on the floor.

The former University of the Philippines big man managed to limped his way back to the Gilas bench, though he no longer returned to finish with eight points, a rebound, and an assist.
