Aston Villa coach John Terry has branded as "nonsense" claims he blocked Chelsea from signing Sergio Aguero before the Argentine joined Manchester City.

The Athletic claimed the former England skipper used his influence at Stamford Bridge to veto a move for the striker after playing against him in the Champions League.

But Terry, 38, firmly denied the suggestions after posting on his Instagram story: "Where do these get the stories from?

"If they bothered calling players agents it would solve an awful lot of nonsense!"

Aguero, 21 at the time, was identified by the club following his remarkable goalscoring form for Atletico Madrid with both Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba into their 30's, reports The Sun.

They had contacted the Spanish club and although initially put off by their 40million asking-price, were working towards a deal.
