Boxer Agit Kabayel has been named WBC heavyweight world champion, making him the first German to hold the title since boxing icon Max Schmeling in 1932.

The WBC said it had awarded him the belt in response to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk relinquishing it.

Usyk had previously announced he would give up all his heavyweight titles but is not retiring. Men's professional boxing has several competing world associations, which crown their own world champion.

"I am incredibly proud to be the first German heavyweight world champion since Max Schmeling 94 years ago and to be his successor. I have reached the goal of my dreams," Kabayel told newspaper Bild on Saturday.

On Instagram, Kabayel also referred to his Kurdish roots and wrote, "Words can't describe what I am feeling right now."

Kabayel had wanted to box Usyk for the title. In February, the WBC even ordered the fight to Kabayel's delight, but Usyk waited before relinquishing his belts this week.
