Ahead of the monsoon season, Deputy Commissioner Aparajita on Monday inspected drain and sewer cleaning works in Kaithal and Kalayat blocks and directed officials to complete all pending operations before the onset of rains.
During the inspection, the DC also ordered the immediate repair of the broken railing at the Sillakhera drain bridge on Khanauri road and instructed the Public Health Engineering Department to ensure proper cleaning of drains passing through the city.
She first visited the Amin drain bridge near Narar village, where she reviewed the desilting and cleaning work being carried out by the Irrigation Department. Executive Engineer Nishant Battan briefed her on the ongoing operations.
Later, the DC visited the pump house at Kalayat, which lifts water from the Pundri drain to the Sirsa branch canal. She reviewed the maintenance and cleanliness of the machinery installed there and directed officials to remove water hyacinth growing in the drain. She also instructed the authorities to maintain proper sanitation in and around the premises.
The DC emphasised that all drains and pump houses must remain fully functional before the arrival of the monsoon. She also closely reviewed the process of lifting water from the Pundri drain to the Sirsa branch canal and gathered information regarding power supply and other essential facilities required during emergencies.
During her inspection of the cleaning work at the Sillakhera drain in Kaithal, the DC noticed a damaged railing on the bridge located on Khanauri road. Taking serious note of the issue, she sought an explanation from Public Health Engineering Department officials and directed them to immediately clear the debris and repair the railing to prevent accidents. She also instructed officials to complete the drain cleaning work within the stipulated time-frame.
The DC later inspected the cleaning work of the drain on Manas road and directed officials to strengthen the entire water drainage system. She said the waste removed during the cleaning operations should be lifted immediately and disposed of properly, warning that leaving garbage near drains could once again obstruct the flow of water.
“No negligence in this work will be tolerated,” she said.
