Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad on Wednesday inspected drain-cleaning work in Yamunanagar and issued instructions to officials of the Municipal Corporation and agencies engaged in the exercise ahead of the monsoon season.
He also directed sanitation workers to carry out the cleaning work using proper safety equipment.
“All big and small drains should be cleaned thoroughly before the monsoon. The silt and dirt removed during the cleaning of drains should also be lifted immediately. Any kind of negligence in cleaning of drains will not be tolerated,” Parsad said.
During the inspection, the Municipal Commissioner, accompanied by Assistant Engineer Surender Dahiya, Chief Sanitation Inspector Harjeet Singh and agency officials, reviewed the cleaning of drains near Chandpur bypass and Vishwakarma Chowk.
At Chandpur, an agency was cleaning a major drain with the help of an earth-moving machine and workers.
Parsad instructed officials to ensure that the cleaning work of all drains was completed before the onset of the monsoon. He also directed officials and agencies to clean the drains to their full depth and immediately remove the garbage and silt extracted during the operation.
The Municipal Commissioner further instructed Municipal Corporation officials to repair damaged and broken drains without delay.
“The locations in the twin cities where waterlogging occurs during the rains should be identified and a permanent solution to the problem should be found. Water flow should be made smooth by removing silt, garbage and other obstructions accumulated in the drains,” Parsad said.
He said encroachments on drains should be removed in accordance with rules so that the problem of waterlogging in the twin cities could be eradicated at its root.
Parsad also appealed to residents not to dump garbage into drains, saying it caused blockages.
