
KALUMPANG Team 1 ruled the Marikina Inter-Barangay 4X4 Rapid Chess Team Tournament at the Q Civic Center, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City on Sunday.
Mark Eric Lao led Kalumpang Team 1 to the championship alongside Jan Roldan Oriendo, Ronald Donasco and Mikayla Tusi.
The Ruben Nepomuceno-coached squad finished the tournament with six wins and one loss for an output of 21.0 game points.
The one-day chess event was sponsored by Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro, Rep. Miro Quimbo and sportsman Johnny “Joel” Gaudia.
Parang Team 1, meanwhile, placed runner-up with 18.5 game points, followed by Kalumpang Team 2 (18.5), Fortune Team 2 (17.5), Parang Team 2 (17.0), Tumana Team 1 (17.0), San Roque (16.0), Marikina Heights 2 (16.0), Barangka Team 1 (15.5) and Fortune (15.0).
Earlier, the ceremonial opening moves was led by Asia’s first chess grandmaster Eugene Torre, tournament director Annjo Dela Cruz and Gaudia, who is also the president of the Marikina Chess Association.
