Senior Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal on Wednesday assumed charge as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar Rural, following the transfer of Sohail Qasim Mir, who has been posted as AIG Personnel-I as part of a major administrative reshuffle involving 11 police officers in the state.
Mir’s transfer came just hours after he addressed a press conference in Amritsar and shared details regarding an FIR registered at the Majitha police station in connection with the alleged storming of the police station by senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia and his supporters.
The case pertains to an incident in which Majithia allegedly led supporters to the Majitha police station while seeking the release of party activist Jobanpreet Singh. Backed by supporters and members of various farmer unions, the SAD leader staged a protest, claiming that the police had not disclosed Jobanpreet’s whereabouts after he was picked up from his residence. He also alleged that the activist had been falsely implicated in a case.
Soon after taking charge, SSP Chahal reiterated his commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety and intensifying the ongoing campaign against drug trafficking in the district. He said eliminating the menace of narcotics and contributing to the creation of a drug-free society would remain among the top priorities of the Amritsar Rural Police.
“The police force will continue to function with professionalism, transparency and dedication to uphold justice and strengthen public trust in law enforcement,” Chahal said.
He also underscored the importance of community participation in tackling social evils, particularly drug abuse, and maintaining peace and harmony in the region. Assuring residents of a proactive policing approach, Chahal said the district police would focus on crime prevention, public security and anti-drug initiatives while remaining accessible to the public.
Calling upon citizens to cooperate actively with the police, the newly appointed SSP said collective efforts were essential to building a safer, more secure and healthier society.
Earlier, senior police officers and personnel welcomed Chahal upon his arrival.
