Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) hosted its annual Karnival Sukan Staf UMS (Karsums) 2025 to strengthen bonds among university employees while promoting physical and mental health through sports activities.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said the event serves three key purposes, namely, fostering stronger relationships among UMS staff across the Kota Kinabalu, Labuan and Sandakan campuses, encouraging healthy lifestyles that support physical and mental well-being and providing opportunities for staff to unwind from work pressures.

Speaking at the opening ceremony at UMS Stadium on Monday, Kasim said participating in sports helps reduce work stress and refreshes the mind, giving staff renewed energy when they return to their duties.

This year marked a significant change as Karsums was held on a working day to enable greater staff participation and support for their respective contingents.

He also acknowledged UMS Registrar Luqman Ridha Anwar and the UMS Sports Centre for organising the carnival, which brought together various events and participation from staff across all university campuses.

“I hope Karsums 2025 proceeds smoothly and harmoniously, creating sweet memories for all UMS staff involved,” Kasim said.

The carnival reflects UMS’s commitment to employee welfare beyond academic excellence, recognising the importance of work-life balance in maintaining a productive and healthy workforce.
