It is also irrefutable that her recent capers — chiefly, her ill-advised jaunt into space with Blue Origin — have evoked public ire, raising more than a few eyebrows. Now, with clips of her Lifetimes tour circulating the internet like vultures around a celebrity in their flop era, Katy Perry has found herself in a maelstrom of memes.
Does Katy Perry deserve the onslaught of memes that have flooded social media since the start of her Lifetimes tour? Perhaps not entirely. But are they funny? Undoubtedly so.

For much of her career, Katy Perry has thrived before larger-than-life backdrops and vividly colourful props, both elements that have fuelled her high-octane performances. That’s why her Lifetimes tour set has been as baffling as it is cringey; notably, some of her moves seem to take more than a little inspiration from other artists. Inspirations appear to have been plucked from random with no rhyme nor reason, leaving fans wanting and wondering: Is there more to this than meets the eye?
The swift outcry against Perry’s tour comes as she navigates the public fallout from her April 14 mission into space — a stunt she had hoped would set the stage for a successful tour once touted to rival Taylor Swift’s highly successful Eras tour.
On the day of, Perry had boarded Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin New Shepard rocket, part of an all-woman crew alongside five others including Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, and Kerianne Flynn. While in space, Perry proceeded to make a spectacle of herself, behaviour she is reportedly regretful of according to undisclosed sources. And sure, bringing a daisy to space in honour of her daughter is a sweet gesture — but twirling it in front of a camera at zero gravity, regaling her crew with a rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”, and using the mission as a stunt to reveal her concert setlist rightly felt like a dystopian show of excess and wealth. A Hunger Games-esque display of us-versus-them, if you will.

Perry hadn’t been in any real danger. That’s why her reaction upon landing felt rehearsed and performative in a way that did little to promote feminism. And for a mission touted to do just that — advance the role of women in sciences and promote feminism — the stunt fell short in more ways than one.
How has the Blue Origin mission affected her tour numbers?
Following the mission, Perry’s popularity took a nosedive on social media, and reports suggest it has negatively impacted her tour sales. The Lifetimes tour, which kicked off in Mexico City on April 23 has been widely ridiculed on social media; yet the shows in Mexico appeared to be sold out affairs. However, the current state of Perry’s ticket sales in the United States tells a completely different story, one more dismal and more accurately reflecting the depths of her fall from grace.

According to Daily Mail and official seating charts on Ticketmaster US, Perry is struggling to sell out her venues in the United States. As of the time of publishing, rows of seats are still available for Perry’s upcoming Oklahoma City show on May 9; ditto for her shows in Kansas City (May 10), Chicago (May 12), Minneapolis (May 13), and Denver (May 15), among others.
Speaking to Daily Mail, an unnamed source shared that there had been ‘concerns about poor ticket sales even before Blue Origin’. The source went on to add that sales had been ‘pretty dismal’, and that ‘Katy truly believed her world tour would take off like Taylor’s.’
Sadly, the reverse has been true thus far. And with the internet collectively rising to roast Perry’s dance moves and creative decisions, the prognosis does not look promising. The source has also claimed that the ‘higher-ups at Live Nation were sceptical from the beginning’, likewise indicating that there had been ‘talks about what to do if the venues don’t fill up further.’
What does this mean for Perry’s tour? Whether or not she opts to make changes to her set remains to be seen. But, thanks to the whimsy of her opening shows in Mexico, the internet is now rife with memes that are equal measures hilarious and cringeworthy.
