The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) announced that Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above can begin applying for the new passport from 1 July, with the option to choose either a five-year or 10-year validity period.

In a statement today, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the introduction of the 10-year passport is expected to reduce the need for frequent renewals, save users’ time, and make both domestic and international travel more convenient.

“The introduction of the new PMA marks an important transformation in strengthening the security of the country’s travel documents, while also offering greater convenience and added value to Malaysians,” he added.

The new Malaysian International Passport was officially launched today (30 June), with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiating the launch following his Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) session in the Dewan Rakyat.

New passport renewal structure in Malaysia

The new passport will be rolled out in stages across 71 passport offices nationwide starting this July to ensure a smooth transition.

KDN also reminded the public not to rush to replace their existing passports if they are still valid, as they can continue to be used until six months before their expiry date.

As for the fees, the 10-year Malaysian Passport will cost RM350, while the five-year passport remains at RM200. This means applicants who opt for the 10-year validity period will save RM50 compared to renewing a five-year passport twice.
