ANGKATAN Muda KEADILAN (AMK) questioned the opposition's action in organising a large-scale convoy when the country and the world are facing geopolitical uncertainties and the pressure of the escalating global energy crisis.
Its Central Leadership Council member, Nadia Nazri, said that in a situation where the global energy supply chain is affected by the West Asian conflict, many countries have begun to take precautionary measures, including controlling fuel consumption and introducing savings policies.
According to her, Malaysia has also taken a proactive approach when the government announced the implementation of work from home (WFH) starting April 15 for the public sector and government-linked companies (GLCs) to reduce fuel consumption.
“At the same time, the country is currently spending almost RM4 billion a month to maintain fuel subsidies, so that the people are not suddenly affected by the global price increase,” she said in a statement.
She explained that the country's fuel consumption is currently around 76 million litres per day, with subsidy costs that can exceed RM100 million per day over a certain period, reflecting the huge economic burden borne by the government for the welfare of the people.
Nadia also compared the measures taken by neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, which has limited fuel consumption to around 50 litres per vehicle, Thailand, which is considering fuel rationing, and the Philippines, which has seen hundreds of petrol stations closed due to a supply crisis.
“However, at the same time, we also see the opposition choosing to move large-scale convoys, including the ‘4 MB Joint Convoy’ held in conjunction with the Fifth International Ijtimak Perpaduan Ummah and Himpunan Alam Melayu 2026.
“The approach through convoys that invites the people to increase fuel consumption en masse raises questions about the priorities and messages they want to convey in the context of current economic and energy challenges,” she stressed.
The young leader argued that if a convoy involved thousands of motorcycles with an average consumption of five litres, tens of thousands of litres of fuel could be used just for one event, at a time when the country is trying to curb rising energy costs.
In this regard, Nadia questioned whether the approach truly reflected the people’s struggle or was simply a political performance.
"In a situation where the country is facing global economic pressure, the opposition should come up with constructive policy proposals on how to strengthen the country's energy security, manage subsidies more sustainably, and ensure more disciplined use of resources," she said. – April 3, 2026
