Rainfall recorded at Pedu, Muda, Beris and Ahning dams as Kedah’s cloud seeding operation continues through Sept 5.
ALOR SETAR: The cloud seeding operation (OPA) in Kedah has successfully brought rain to the Pedu, Muda and Beris dams, helping to increase water levels at the state’s dams and catchment areas.
Kedah Meteorological Office director Muhammad Khalil Abd Aziz said the three-day operation, which began yesterday and will run until Sept 5, also resulted in rainfall being recorded around Ahning Dam
“The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) provided technical advice and expertise for the operation, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
“The operation, using an RMAF C130 Hercules aircraft, was carried out at 1.52pm over Ahning Dam, 2pm over Pedu Dam and 2.21pm over Beris Dam, at altitudes of between 5,000 and 6,000 feet,” he said in a statement today.
The operation targeted key catchment areas in Kedah and Perlis that remained at alert to critical levels.
During the operation, meteorological conditions, including active convective and towering cumulus clouds, high atmospheric moisture, atmospheric instability and favourable wind patterns, supported the development of rain clouds.
“Based on weather radar data, rainfall activity was detected in the catchment areas of Pedu, Muda and Beris dams during the operation, while rain was also observed around Ahning Dam,” he said.
