Kedah districts hit by severe heatwave, 16 areas on alert

Three Kedah districts are under a Level 2 heatwave, with 16 other areas across Peninsular Malaysia on alert as temperatures soar.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three districts in Kedah are experiencing a severe Level 2 heatwave, according to the latest update from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

A total of 16 other areas across the peninsula have been placed under a Level 1 alert as of 6am today.

The affected districts in Kedah are Pokok Sena, Pendang and Baling.

Areas under the Level 1 alert include Sik, Padang Terap, Kubang Pasu, Langkawi, Kuala Muda, Kulim and Bandar Baharu in Kedah.

The entire state of Perlis is also on alert, along with the North East and North districts of Penang.

Other regions under Level 1 are Hulu Perak, Selama, Kinta and Kuala Kangsar in Perak, as well as Jerantut and Raub in Pahang.

A Level 2 heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature ranges from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.

The Level 1 alert status is triggered when daily maximum temperatures reach 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for a minimum of three days in a row.
