Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, the Menteri Besar of Kedah, has publicly confirmed his second marriage and addressed rumors linking his new spouse to the ongoing investigation into rare earth elements (REE) in Kedah. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Sanusi clarified that his new wife, a police officer, is not involved in the REE case.

Sanusi, who has been married to his first wife, Tok Puan Jusmalailani Jusoh, since February 14, 1999, revealed that he recently married a police officer. According to Sanusi, the proposal for his second marriage was initiated by his first wife, who approached the family of his new wife several months ago. He assured that both the engagement and wedding were conducted properly, with his first wife and their son present during the ceremonies.

Responding to speculation, Sanusi emphasized that his new wife, who works as an explosives investigator at the official residence of the menteri besar, Seri Mentaloon, is not involved in the REE investigation. He stated, “My wife is not connected to the REE case; she handles explosives cases, not REE investigations.”

Sanusi also addressed rumors suggesting that his marriage was linked to the REE investigation, asserting that he had no prior acquaintance with his second wife before their marriage. He added, “We had not met before the marriage; we did not know each other. It was after our marriage that we grew closer.”

The Kedah MB responded to these rumors with a touch of humor, saying, “It’s not an issue, I have a quota for two more [wives].” He urged the public to respect his family’s privacy and not sensationalize the matter.

The controversy surrounding Sanusi’s personal life comes amid an ongoing investigation into illegal REE mining in Kedah. Last July, several Kedah executive council (exco) members were questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the case. Sanusi himself confirmed in September that he had provided a statement to the MACC regarding the investigation.

Further developments include the arrest of a senior officer from Kedah Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and a female company director in October, related to a corruption case involving over RM13 million and abuse of power in the REE mining issue. Additionally, Sanusi’s former political secretary, Mohamad Hilmi Abdul Wahab, faced charges in November last year for soliciting and accepting bribes related to the REE mining project.
