Kedah Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has recently confirmed his second marriage, drawing both public attention and controversy. Addressing the speculation surrounding his personal life, Sanusi clarified that his second wife, a police officer, has no involvement in the ongoing rare earth elements (REE) case under investigation in the state, quoted by Sinar Harian.

In a press conference, Sanusi shared that his first wife, Tok Puan Jusmalailani Jusoh, played an active role in his second marriage. He mentioned that it was Jusmalailani who took the initiative to approach his second wife's family for the proposal. “The process was completed months ago in an orderly manner, and both my wife and son were present during the engagement and wedding,” he said, stressing that the entire procedure adhered to traditional customs.

Despite keeping his family life private, Sanusi felt the need to address rumors linking his second marriage to the REE investigation. Media reports speculated that his new wife’s involvement in the police force might have a connection to the case. However, Sanusi categorically denied these allegations, clarifying that his wife is not involved in the REE probe but is instead an explosives case investigator at the Menteri Besar's official residence, Seri Mentaloon.

He also disclosed that his relationship with his second wife only began after their marriage, quipping, “We were not friends before, and there was no love before marriage. After marriage, we fell in love.”

Sanusi took the opportunity to further clarify a previous comment about “arresting those who wanted to arrest him,” explaining that it was a joke directed at Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, not his wife. He urged the public to respect his family’s privacy and avoid sensationalising his marital affairs.

In response to media inquiries about his personal decisions, Sanusi joked about his polygamous marriage, saying, “It’s not an issue, I have a quota of two more.” The remark reflected his lighthearted approach to the situation, despite the intense scrutiny surrounding him.

Sanusi, who has been married to Jusmalailani since 1999 and shares five children with her, is currently in the spotlight for the ongoing REE investigation in Kedah. Earlier reports revealed that several Kedah executive council members were questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) concerning the illegal mining of REE. Sanusi’s former political secretary, Mohamad Hilmi Abdul Wahab, faced charges last year for soliciting bribes connected to the project, adding to the growing political pressure on the Menteri Besar’s office.

As Sanusi navigates the intertwining of his political career and personal life, he continues to ask the public to focus on the facts of the REE investigation while allowing his family to maintain their privacy amidst the media frenzy.
