Kedah rugby coach killed in tragic road accident

Kedah U-12 rugby coach Mohd Amirul Awang died after his motorcycle collided with a Ford Ranger making a sudden U-turn in Sungai Petani.

SUNGAI PETANI: A Kedah state boys’ Under-12 rugby team coach died following a road accident at Kilometer 3.5 Jalan Sungai Petani-Kuala Ketil this afternoon.

Kuala Muda District Police Chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the victim, Mohd Amirul Awang, 34, suffered head injuries in the collision.

Mohd Amirul was pronounced dead at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital after the 2.30 pm incident.

“The victim, who was also a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tuan Syed Al-Jafri, was riding a Honda Vario motorcycle from Sungai Petani towards Kuala Ketil,” Hanyan said.

“A Ford Ranger driven by a 27-year-old man reportedly made a sudden U-turn from the opposite direction.”

The victim could not avoid the vehicle and collided with the front of the 4×4.

Mohd Amirul was rushed to hospital by ambulance but was confirmed dead at approximately 4 pm.

His body has been taken to the HSAH Forensic Unit for post-mortem examination.

Police will request a remand order for the Ford Ranger driver tomorrow to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. – Bernama
