R. Murugan, head of Kelab Olahraga Setiawangsa in Kuala Lumpur, is thrilled to finally organise the club’s second athletics competition.
A former SEA Games medallist, Murugan had been planning the 2nd Kelab Olahraga Setiawangsa meet since last year but faced difficulties securing a venue. He eventually succeeded in booking TNB Stadium in Kajang, Selangor.
“We held our first meet in 2023, but couldn’t host one last year. One of the main issues was the cost. But I’ve finally managed to get the TNB Stadium for Aug 3,” said Murugan.
“The date is perfect as it’s two weeks before the Schools Sports Council of Malaysia (MSSM) meet in Perlis.
“I expect many top athletes to register as it will be their final chance to fine-tune their performance ahead of MSSM. It promises to be a great event.”
The meet will feature sprints, middle-distance events, and relays, with several age categories from 10 to 16 years old. A highlight will be the ‘Golden Mile’ Open Division, which offers prize money.
The competition will serve as a platform for athlete development and talent discovery.
Murugan said the meet offers young athletes the chance to assess their progress and standing in a competitive setting.
“We have many talented athletes under our training, but there’s only so much progress that can be made in training alone,” he said.
“As a coach, it’s important not only to provide training, but also to create opportunities for athletes to measure their growth.
“This event will allow them to experience a competitive environment and get valuable feedback to shape future training and performance.”
Murugan added that registration forms should be ready by June 20.
“For more details and to register, follow us on Facebook,” said Murugan.
