Over 2,000 free chun lian are being distributed in Kelantan for Chinese New Year to promote cultural heritage and support traditional calligraphy art.

GUA MUSANG: More than 2,000 *chun lian* are being distributed free to the Chinese community across Kelantan for Chinese New Year celebrations.

The initiative aims to preserve the traditional art of Chinese calligraphy and encourage younger generations to value their cultural heritage.

The auspicious phrases are written in black ink on red paper, known as *hongzhi*, by calligraphers from the Kelantan Calligraphy Art Association.

Association chairman Cheong Swee Cham said the free distribution covers the districts of Gua Musang, Kota Bharu, Kuala Krai and Pasir Mas.

“Chun lian are traditionally pasted on doors to seek blessings, good fortune and positive hopes for the new year,” he said.

He explained that while *chun lian* are normally sold, they are being given away this time to ensure the traditional art form does not fade with time.

Cheong emphasised that *chun lian* should not be seen merely as decorations, as the art of calligraphy requires significant skill, discipline and continuous practice.

The Gua Musang Buddhist Association is collaborating closely on the project to facilitate distribution.

Its chairman, Cheong Oi Fun, said *chun lian* can typically cost from RM10 to several hundred ringgit each, depending on the calligraphy’s complexity and materials.

“For this initiative, 11 experienced calligraphers were specially brought in from Kota Bharu,” she added.

They produced *chun lian* symbolising new beginnings, prosperity and success for the upcoming Year of the Horse.
