A months-long economic boycott connected to the Gaza conflict has resulted in the "temporary closure" of over 100 Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) locations in Malaysia.

The American chain's 108 stores had reportedly stopped operating. The worst affected state was Kelantan, where up to 21 locations, or approximately 80% of the establishments, were closed.

According to Channel News Asia, the report claims that 15 stores in Johor, 11 in Selangor and Kedah, 10 in Terengganu, 10 in Pahang, 9 in Perak, 6 in Negeri Sembilan, 2 in Perlis, 2 in Melaka, 5 in Penang, 3 in Kuala Lumpur, 2 in Sarawak, and 1 in Sabah were also temporarily closed.

The company that owns and runs KFC in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Cambodia, QSR Brands, stated that it has taken preemptive steps to temporarily close locations in order to manage rising business expenses and concentrate on high-engagement trade zones in response to the difficult economic climate.

As a company that has been serving Malaysians for more than 50 years, it stated that its focus is still on giving customers high-quality goods and services while also positively influencing the country's economy by guaranteeing the jobs of 18,000 team members, the majority of whom are Muslims.

However, the number of affected locations and employees remained undisclosed. Over 600 KFC locations may be found in Malaysia, with the first one opening in Kuala Lumpur in 1973.

In Shah Alam, Selangor, CNA conducted checks on 3 stores within a five-kilometer radius. 2 of the outlets had "closed" signs, and the other was open but unoccupied.

The nation is currently experiencing further negative effects from the boycotts, which began in October, according to economist Yeah Kim Leng of Sunway University. She stated that these effects affected employment as well as the supply chains of these eateries.
