Kingfisher Park residents still face water shortage

Kota Kinabalu: Residents of Kingfisher Park in Putatan continue to face an unreliable water supply despite meetings involving Putatan MP Datuk Shahelmy Yahya, Petagas Assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Sahari, the Waterworks Department, community leaders, condominium management and residents.

The Daily Express reported on July 25 that steps were being taken to address the problem. However, weeks later, residents said taps still run dry and water remains scarce, forcing households to ration supplies or seek alternatives.

For many families, the shortage has disrupted basic needs such as cooking, washing and personal hygiene.

Retiree Sarjit Ramday, who lives with his wife on a higher floor, said they had been assured when they moved into the condominium about two years ago that the water problem would be resolved by the end of 2024.

However, the issue remains unresolved, leaving residents frustrated and disappointed.

Sarjit said they sometimes have to go to their children’s homes to shower. Those without family nearby may have to stay at hotels, which can be costly.

“There are days when we have to go to our children’s homes just to take a shower. But how many people can truly afford to do that?” he asked.

Residents have also resorted to storing water in plastic containers whenever supply is available.

However, some residents said excessive water storage in condominium units could create safety concerns, including the risk of containers cracking, overflowing or causing water damage to units below.

They also raised concerns about the weight limits of condominium structures, particularly for residents living on higher floors.

Sarjit said the situation had become exhausting, as residents had to constantly conserve water and sometimes carry dirty laundry elsewhere to be washed.

Residents are now calling for a clear and lasting solution, saying the prolonged water shortage has placed an unnecessary burden on the community.

They hope the relevant authorities and parties involved will take urgent action to restore a reliable water supply to Kingfisher Park.
