KK Masters in outstanding Samoc 2026 performance

Kota Kinabalu: The Kinabalu Knights Masters Athletics Club (KK Masters) delivered an outstanding performance at the 14th Sabah Masters Athletics Competition (Samoc), held at Likas Stadium from June 12-14.

The championship was officially closed by Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.

Led by President Shamry Mohd Ali and Team Manager Alison Chew, KK Masters proudly emerged as the overall 1st runners-up despite fielding a relatively small contingent of just 43 athletes.

The team amassed an impressive medal haul of 29 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze medals.

Among the team’s standout achievements were several exceptional individual performances:Vierawati Binti Haris (W35) was named Best Female Athlete with 2 gold medals and a new record in the 1,500m. Tammy Chew (W45) earned the Best Female Athlete award with 4 gold medals and 2 new records in the 800m and 1,500m.

Yusop Tungkob (M55) was recognised as Best Male Athlete after winning 3 gold medals and setting a new record in the 800m. National Paralympian Jonathan Wong Kar Gee (M35) also created 2 new records in the long jump and triple jump.

Meanwhile, the oldest athlete, 73-year-old Datuk Mulok Abdol Damit, contributed 4 gold medals to the team. It can be described as outstanding performances, especially when considering the athletes’ ages.

KK Masters also maintained its dominance in relay events. The women’s 4x100m relay team successfully defended its championship title for the fifth consecutive year, while the men’s 4x100m relay team secured a strong gold-medal finish.

The club’s mixed 4x200m relay team further showcased its excellence by setting a new competition record for the second consecutive year.

KK Masters hope to deliver better results at Samoc 2027, while also wishing the best to some of their athletes who will be competing in the World Masters Athletics Competition in Daegu, South Korea this August.

Team Manager Alison Chew said they are looking forward to next competition, adding that the members are getting prepared and ready for the challenge.
