Despite the lack of rain, a road in Kuala Lumpur became flooded early this morning (January 2).

The flood occurred opposite the Ritz Carlton Residences on Jalan Sultan Ismail and caused major traffic congestion during peak hours when road users were commuting to work.

According to Astro Radio Traffic, the flood caused a 20-minute congestion that stretched from Wisma FGV to The Ritz Carlton Residences, making the road more congested as everyone rushed to work.

A Facebook post by DBKL and the Kuala Lumpur Command & Control Centre (KLCCC) revealed that burst water pipes were the cause of the unexpected flood.

As of 9 AM this morning, the heavy traffic on Jalan Sultan Ismail also affected those on Jalan Kuching who came from Taman Mastiara and Jalan Kinabalu. PDRM deployed officers for traffic control on the affected roads.

While heavy traffic is largely inevitable on Kuala Lumpur roads, this was not the first reported case of burst underground water pipes on Jalan Sultan Ismail.

In September 2024, a similar case happened during morning rush hour, causing the road to be closed after a sinkhole was formed and other roads also appeared to be sunken.

In May 2024, a tree fell on the same road, opposite the Concorde Hotel due to a heavy downpour, causing massive traffic congestion and damage to cars during the evening rush hour and forcing the Monorail to suspend operations.
